Chapter 12

A red jet flashed through the air. Hit at the upper end of his right leg, the insectoid collapsed and went down. I stared at the bullet hole in horror. These beings were far more resilient than the inhabitants of our planet. A human being would have been torn to shreds the entire thigh without further ado.

A black, oily liquid seeped out of a relatively small hole. A trickle poured onto the dark green lawn and formed a slowly spreading pool.

„There, that asshole won't try to run away again so soon.” Ajeet stepped forward and looked proudly around.

„What a weirdo,“ Tekla whispered in shock. Her thin little voice irritated me far more than her loud and inconsiderate remarks.

„Sakushi, we need your help!“

Just as shocked by the event, the healer hesitantly set herself in motion.

„Hey, what the fuck, Lennox?“ Ajeet went in between and held Sakushi's arm back.

„I covered for you to get out of where Leon is?“

„That's right, bright boy. Now that the wanker has realized how serious his situation is, our chances of getting information have probably improved a lot.“

„Improved“? You're a real hollow fry! Then you better hurry, you won't have much time.“

„What do you think?“ Ajeet sounded a little uneasy now after all.

„Tek, you tell him. He won't believe me anyway.“

„Since the insectoid is quite similar to a human in size and stature, I assume an analogous scenario of - let's say in the absence of a correct designation - blood loss. Considering the viscous consistency and a composition of the…..”

„Tek! Please not a complete paper. Just tell me how long.“

Tekla used her index finger to adjust her glasses „mm, I think about thirty to forty minutes. Optimistically estimated.“

„Forty minutes to what?“ Ajeet asked superfluously.

„Well, till he dies! What do you think? Go for it! In the best case, you have forty minutes left to find out where they took Leon. Or….“

„Or what?“ The Indian looked at me with a distraught look. His oh so great plan had backfired and now he didn't know what to do.

„Or you let Sakushi try to heal the wound. If all goes well he will stay alive and we will have the opportunity to communicate with him.“

It didn't take a superior intelligence to realize that it was almost impossible to extract any meaningful information from an alien being on its deathbed in the remaining minutes. Ajeet reluctantly gave in.

„All right. Let's see where this goes with what Mulder and Scully are up to.“

Sakushi went after the Insectoid. A few steps before him she stopped and stared at the alien being.

„No, guys, I can't do this.” She turned and stormed off. I pursued her. When I had caught up with her, I grabbed the petite Asian woman by the shoulder, turned to her and looked into her dark eyes „Look at me Sakushi!“ I spoke to the young woman in a firm voice, urging her to speak up „Listen to me carefully! Keeping the insect alive is the only way to save Leon.
